Common Questions About ABA Therapy

  • WHAT IS ABA THERAPY
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. ABA changes the environment in order to change the behavior. ABA therapy is used to improve behaviors like social skills, reading, academics, and communication as well as learned skills like grooming, hygiene, and fine motor skills.
  • Who qualifies for ABA Therapy services?
There are over 25 Diagnoses that qualify for ABA, the most common are: Autism spectrum disorder Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder Obsessive compulsive disorder Oppositional defiant disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder Panic disorder Traumatic brain injury sufferers
  • Who Can Provide ABA Therapy Services?
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) is responsible for maintaining the quality and integrity of practitioners in the field of ABA. ABA therapy is commonly provided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who supervises the work of a Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) and by a team of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).
  • WHAT DOES AN ABA THERAPIST DO?
The therapist builds rapport and develops a connection with the child. Their interactions involve playtime, positive reinforcement, understanding what motivates the child, and keeping them engaged. As time goes on, the specialist and the child will try different techniques and play styles to learn more about each other, build trust, and improve the child’s behavior through learning strategies.
  • Does Insurance Cover ABA Therapy?
At Camero ABA therapy, we accept most insurance providers including Medicaid, Cigna, Aetna, UMR, and others. Insurance providers take the stress out of payment plans. Through our services, children receive the highest level of care and attention they deserve.
  • Does my child need a doctor’s diagnosis to receive therapy?
Yes, your child will need a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to confirm an autism diagnosis to receive covered therapy. Your insurance provider is your best resource to help you find a medical professional to complete this assessment. Qualified diagnostic experts may include a developmental pediatrician, neurologist, or psychologist.
  • Is ABA Only for Children with Autism?
ABA can help manage lifestyle challenges for children and adults with autism or other mental and physical health conditions. Other conditions it can treat include anxiety, anger issues, dementia and substance abuse.
  • WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder that is neurological in nature, although behaviorally diagnosed. According to the latest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) as published in 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) constitutes deficits along three major areas of development: 1) Persistent difficulties in social communication and interaction, 2) Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities, and 3) With or without accompanying language or intellectual impairment.
  • Who Can Diagnose My Child with Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is typically diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist. If you suspect your child has autism, contact your child’s pediatrician who will then provide you with a referral for a diagnostic assessment with a pediatric neurologist. If a more thorough autism specific assessment is required by your insurance carrier in order to cover ABA therapy services, this service may be provided by a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. This additional assessment may or may not require another referral from your pediatrician depending on your health insurance plan.
